Read passage carefully and then answer the questions about it. For each question, decide on the basis of the passage which one of the choices best answers the question.

  1. In recent years, scientific research has done
  2. much to alter long-held beliefs about history. This
  3. is particularly true of scholarship surrounding the
  4. Silk Road. The Silk Road was a trans-Asian trading
  5. route that extended across two continents, linking
  6. China with the center of European trade in the
  7. Mediterranean. Most famous for the transport of
  8. silk, this ancient highway was also the conduit for
  9. such items as roses, peaches, gunpowder, and
  10. paper. Systems of belief were also passed along the
  11. road: The spread of Christianity, Buddhism, and
  12. Islam was accelerated by the connection between
  13. East and West.
  14. Based on historical texts, historians have
  15. traditionally believed that the Silk Road was
  16. established in 115 B.C.E., yet the recent discovery of
  17. a much older piece of silk in Egypt suggests that the
  18. road was established at least a thousand years
  19. earlier. Through carbon dating, scientists dated the
  20. fabric of the newly discovered piece of silk to around
  21. 1000 B.C.E. In that period, only the Chinese held the
  22. secret to silk manufacturing; Mediterranean
  23. countries would not develop the technology to
  24. manufacture silk until the sixth century C.E. As a
  25. result, historians now believe that Asia and Europe
  26. may have traded silk via the Silk Road as long ago as
  27. the second century B.C.E.—though exactly how
  28. traders navigated the plateaus, mountains, and
  29. deserts that lie along the route remains a mystery.
